How to Avoid Bank Holiday Roads

Bank holidays. The source of huge amounts of joy and equal amounts of misery for so many people across the country. With extra time off it is the perfect time to get away and in turn the most inappropriate time to do anything that involves using the roads.

No matter whether your needs are business or pleasure, staying off the roads at peak times is going to ensure that any travel you do need to make at such times is far more enjoyable and far more productive.

For those looking to get away, heading off straight after work can be beneficial, whilst for those in higher traffic areas in general, travelling last thing at night or first thing in the morning will make the journey far easier and give you far more time at your destination.

For businesses, or individuals needing to transit goods of some kind, avoiding the roads can be tricky. However, using a courier to do such deliveries for you will mean that you will end up paying no more or less for your delivery, but lead you to save a lot of valuable time instead. Many couriers can even be found at reduced prices at any time of the year by looking on sites that match up people looking for deliveries with companies already travelling from your area to your destination. Since they will not be going out of their way, such couriers can therefore offer space for your items at a far lower rate. This means that whilst you are saving valuable time you can actually even end up saving money too by using such a courier.

Bank holiday roads can be a nightmare, but with a small amount of forethought and the right knowledge, those roads don’t have to cause you any problems at all, no matter what you are using them for.

Easter Bank Holiday Heat

The Easter weekend that we have just experienced was the hottest on record, and for that reason it comes as no surprise that we saw thousands of people flooding to resorts like West Wittering, Southbanks, Bournemouth and Brighton in the south, and Blackpool and Weston Super Mare in the north. Brighton experienced a surge of over four hundred thousand people in that weekend alone, and shops and cafes struggled with the large amounts of tourists that descended, running out of drinks and food due to the large amount of people flooding through their doors. The traffic also increased, as it’s notoriously difficult to get in and out of Brighton, and tailbacks were seen as far as twenty miles away from the city, but people preserved to get to the beach which was hotter than Corfu and Majorca.

In Bournemouth, the otters in the aquarium had to be given ice lollies to cope with the temperatures, and it was advised that asthma sufferers stay indoors and avoid sport, as the smog was thick due to the addition of more cars on the road. This combined with the heat could have triggered attacks. This was the first smog warning for over a year, indicating that this summer could be set to be a hot one, and it was also asked that people didn’t get in their cars unless it was absolutely necessary to reduce adding to the smog any further.

Traditional bank holiday jams in locations like the M5 in Somerset are common, but the M1 saw a fire and parts were closed, further adding to the tailbacks across the country. The association of train operating companies said that there were six million train journeys on that weekend, as it s a much more feasible way of travelling rather than having to find space to park and sit in a tailback to get back out of the city.

If you are planning on travelling anywhere in the UK in the car this summer then make sure you have Drivers Insurance, as this is a legal requirement in the UK. Accidents are far higher in the busy periods, and this will protect you in the case of an accident.

Money Off Your Chosen Cruise Holiday

As with any holiday you want to get the best deal possible and this is certainly true when it comes to cruises. While the price of a cruise holiday has dropped considerably over the past decade or so and firms are now offering these breakaways at a much better rate than they were before it is still true that you can get even more money off by just following a few tips.

Firstly you may want to consider taking up a cabin further inside the ship itself. Many people prefer to have a nice view and a lot of sunlight coming into their room while they are on board the ship however there are many to only see the cabin as a place for sleeping and changing and therefore will not be fussed about the view or the location of the cabin within the ship. Opting for one of these cabins will reduce your overall price as the bigger ones that do come with a view are more highly sought after and will, therefore, add a considerable sum onto your final holiday price. In addition to this you may want to consider how many people will be sharing the cabin itself. As we said, many people view the room as a basic place to sleep and change clothes for the evening so if you are happy to share with the rest of your party then try and get a big cabin but one which is designed to sleep a number of people; this will also reduce your price as more people will be paying for the cabin itself as opposed to just one or two.

If you have been on a cruise before then it is worth going with the same cruise company and liner if you were satisfied first time round. The fact is that some of these companies will offer a discount to frequent or repeat travellers and while it may not get you a massive amount of money of your next voyage it will still allow you to save some pounds in regard to the overall price and that money can then be put towards your excursions etc… Indeed, we want our cruise holiday to be a fantastic break away and with a few choice decisions in regard to your cabin etc… then you can see a bit of a saving when it comes to paying for your trip.

How to save money on a holiday

Many people overlook the opportunities on their doorsteps. Britain has some of the most beautiful countryside in the world and it’s just outside your front door. Travelling in Britain doesn’t mean that it has to be boring or expensive. Caravanning is the perfect way to explore Britain on a budget.

The only thing that can hold you back is the cost of buying a caravan, but not anymore. You can rent a caravan or campervan for a small amount of money and decide whether it is for you. If it isn’t then you can just give the campervan back, which is not as easy if you have bought the vehicle.

There are many plus points to caravanning. It is great for all ages, just think of the Volkswagen campervans from the 60s and tell me camper vanning is not cool! Older people enjoy caravanning because they can take all their home comforts with them. Younger people enjoy it because they can take off and camp in fields, they can go anywhere they want including Europe. Young families enjoy it because it is relatively cheap and hassle free.

Caravanning is great for families because you can just pack up and get in the car. Caravan sites are very child friendly and there are always other kids running around. There don’t have to be any tantrums and calls of ‘are we there yet?’ Caravanning can be carefree. If you plan to go in the UK there are no language barriers and there is no need to exchange money before you go.

A caravan is a home away from home, you can take all the things you can’t live without and you don’t have to worry about recording your favourite programmes. The biggest worry about going away is what you are going to do with your pets, not with caravanning; you can bring them with you. Having your pets with you will only heighten your holiday experience especially if you are going on a walking holiday.

There are hundreds of different caravan sites scattered across the country all with great amenities and friendly staff. Sometimes it is more comfortable to stay in a caravan than a hotel.

If the whim took you, you could take the caravan abroad, although you should check with the caravan provider before you do this. There are many caravan sites across Europe and driving between locations can be the best way to see the country. You can get off the tourist trails and explore the wide open countryside. You can hop from rural village to city, you can do wherever you want.

So why not investigate campervan rental and discover a whole new world of opportunities.

Saving Money on Holiday

If you’re the kind of person who likes to go on holiday a lot, you’ll probably know by now that the more money that you can save on each trip, the more trips you can afford to go on in future! If this is you, here a few handy hints and tips to help you get more for less on your next excursion:

A good tip for saving money on your next trip to South America is to consider travelling by coach or bus. Tickets for luxury coaches, with comfortable seats and plenty legroom, cost a fraction of what they do in the UK, and allow you to get a widescreen view of the changing landscape as you travel.

You can often travel very cheaply on night trains if you book seats rather than berths. These carriages are usually just about empty, so there’s plenty space to stretch out and have a nap. If you’re not travelling at a busy time, the train staff will often offer you a berth upgrade for nothing anyway, just to save on the heating bill for the empty seated carriages.

The fact that you’re reading this right now is proof in itself that you’re a web-savvy customer, so it hardly needs saying that the best deals are to be had online. Nonetheless, smart people can be lazy procrastinators too, so let this be a reminder to you to book online in advance for any journeys that you know you will be going on if you want to avoid paying through the nose for on-the-day travel. Even if you reckon you might have left it too late, tickets for travel can often be purchased at the last minute online that are far cheaper than you’ll be offered at the station. Think about it – if you’re already at the station, they know that you’ve already made up your mind that you’re going to travel that day, and that’s the gun they put to your head when they hit you with the bill.

Taxi cabs are a great way to travel if you’re a movie star and money is like toilet paper to you. For the rest of us, however, taxis are a total rip-off, and only make financial sense if you’re too drunk to drive yourself, or you literally can’t find any other mode of transport. If you really want to experience a place through the day, you’re much better off getting on the public buses. Not only does this work out a lot cheaper, but it also gives you a much wider appreciation of the culture of the place you are visiting.

If you have to take a taxi, speak to the locals first to find out what the average fares are, and always negotiate your fare in advance with the driver or you could end up getting charged ‘tourist rates’ that are far higher than anyone else is paying.

If you’re travelling around anyway, use sleeper trains, as although these are usually a little more expensive than daytime trains, you get a night’s free accommodation, and you waste less of your precious days abroad this way.

Multi journey tickets and travelcards can be a great way to save cash on fares if you plan on moving around a lot. The daddy of all multi journey tickets is of course the European Inter-rail scheme, which allows you unlimited travel within the EU for little more than the average aeroplane return ticket!

If you’re the gregarious sort, it pays to make friends everywhere you go. Having buddies all over the world can make foreign holidays cheaper, easier, and a lot more fun than if you choose to stay in your shell. As long as you’re willing to put up with them when they visit your country, that is…!If you’re looking to do a bit of sightseeing, get together with some fellow travellers and chip in for a hire car. This means that you can go wherever you want, and you don’t have to wait about for ages to get picked up at the end of it. It’s certainly cheaper than hiring a chauffeur for the day!
